Amazon.com With a nasty villain and a plot twist that will take many viewers by surprise, Derailed is the kind of potboiler that's enjoyable in spite of its flaws. It's basically two-thirds of a good movie, with a convincing set-up and a barely plausible payoff that... well, you've just got to see it and decide for yourself. Like Fatal Attraction, it's a good-enough thriller that turns infidelity into every man's nightmare, beginning when Charles (Clive Owen), a well-to-do Chicago advertising director with a sickly, diabetic daughter and a slightly troubled marriage, has a chance encounter with Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston), a lovely and quick-witted financial advisor who's also stuck in a marital rut. Their chemistry is instant (between both characters and stars), but their eventual hotel tryst is interrupted by a mugger (French actor Vincent Cassel at his vile, despicable best) who's out to milk Charles for every dollar he's got. Of course, one phone call to the police would solve everyone's problems, but as he did with Collateral (albeit more convincingly), screenwriter Stuart Beattie turns up the tension with such manipulative skill that you're willing to skate past the plot holes and go along for the ride. With lively supporting performances by rappers Xzibit and RZA, Derailed marks a commercially slick American debut for Swedish director Mikael Håfström, whose 2003 thriller Evil was a Best Foreign Film Oscar®-nominee. --Jeff Shannon
IT'S ONLY ME, BUT:
CLIVE OWEN IS MARRIED WITH A CHILD WHO NEEDS A TRANSPLANT REQUIRING BIG TIME MONEY. JENNIFER ANISTEN AND HE BOY FRIEND RUN A RING OF THUGS WHO SET UP MEN WITH MONEY TO FIRST GET THEM TO HOTEL RUMS WITH JEN, AND THEN BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THEM, ROB THEM, AND THEN WEEKS LATER COME BACK AND BLACKMAIL THEM. CLIVE WILL TURN THE SCEME BACK ON THEM. JM
Surprisingly Good
This is a good, solid movie, well above average. The plot twists are very entertaining, and I didn't see any of them coming. The video and sound on the DVD are very good. This is worth a purchase at around $5-6.
Derailed and decieved
I've always loved thrillers, that "who done it" mentality, and wondering what will happen next. Perhaps the best thing about these movies is guessing who really is the villain and what the bigger plan is. For me, I guessed the ending about halfway through the movie and left the remainder to unfold. Still, this was a good movie.
Clive Owen plays Charles, a well to do, average guy in a Chicago suburb who is living a somewhat boring and somewhat troubled life. His marriage is not exactly happy these days, and he has a sickly, diabetic child who is taking a toll on him. On a train to the city one day, he meets a clever, cheerful Jennifer Aniston. They go from casual aquaintences to friends, then, thinking this is going to turn into a Fatal Attraction-esque movie, he decides to have a tryst with Aniston in a sleazy hotel room. Their encounter goes terribly wrong when a mugger breaks in, and soon he is being terrorized literally and figuratively by his own guilt and the mugger's continued harassment of him and his family.
How many little moments of insanity have cost us things? Adultery, wanting to steal that pretty little item, greediness, and jealousy have always motivated us to do things we wish we hadn't. And we wish we hadn't given into those little wants or needs that ended up costing us things. It is part of life's learning experiences. None of us are perfect. This is an extreme example of what happens when we don't think about the consequences of our actions. A good movie, a tad predictable, but still a good time.

A real supprise of a super movie. I had no idea of the excellant twists towards the middle and end of the movie. Who is everybody anyway? A real nice Hitchcock theme of a movie. After renting it I just had to own it. You will be stunned and I am sure you will like it as well.
